The Vatican City is an independent state situated in the Italian state, in the hearth of Rome, which was declared a patrimony of humanity by UNESCO in 1980.
It is defined more specifically as City – State and, like any other state, it has its symbol, its currency, its policy and its politics which decides the home directives and international relations.
Even if the geographical sizes of Vatican are small, this does not mean that it is an irrelevant or economically weak state, on the contrary it is one of the richest states in the world, it has its own bank ( Ior) and an enormous political influence both in Italy and abroad.
The sovereignty of the Vatican State is an “absolute monarchy” under the authority of Pope who not only is the head of State, with full legislative, executive and judicial powers, but he is also the head of the Catholic Church, one of the most known and practised religions in the World.
Up to 1870 its territory included most of Central Italy. It was added to the Reign of Italy only in 1870, when in the historical date of 20 September, with the historical “Breach of Porta Pia” bersaglieri’s entered the Papal State and occupied it militarily.
Rome was declared Capital of Italy and the temporal power of Popes was finally abolished, with a consequent worsening of the relations between Italy and Vatican which were settled only after 59 years, on 11th February 1959, with the signature of the “Lateran Treaty”.
Choosing the Vatican area for your holiday in Rome gives many interesting ideas from the historical and cultural point of view; suffice it to think about the marvels of Vatican Museums, such as the famous Sistine Chapel painted by the great Michelangelo, St. Peter’s Church and the big square with its wonderful colonnade..
Those who love religion can listen to the Pope on Sunday while he appears at the window of St. Peter’s Square.
Moreover those who want to have a good time can find a lot of enjoyment in the Vatican area, where there are many important shopping streets and famous historical roman bars which connect it with the other sought-after areas, such as the nearby Piazza Navona and the Pantheon, the characteristic and historical suburb and up to the not far Piazza di Spagna and Fontana di Trevi.
