San Giovanni ( St. John in Lateran)

San Giovanni is one of the more lively and typical areas in Rome’s city centre.

It is situated in a strategic point of Rome, a few minutes’ walk from Termini railway station and from Piazza Re di Roma, and it is also near Porta Maggiore (the biggest of the ancient Aureliane walls) in a very picturesque and cheerful background.

The area was named after the very famous Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano, the first of the four papal Basilicas and the more ancient Western Basilica. Its complete name is Arcibasilica del Santissimo Salvatore e dei Santi Giovanni Battista ed Evangelista in Laterano, mother and head of all the City’s Churches (par excellence, that is of Rome) and of the world (in Latin: Archibasilica Sanctissimi Salvatoris et Sanctorum Iohannis Baptistae et Evangelistae in Laterano, omnium Urbis et orbis ecclesiarum mater et caput)

The big green park situated in front of the Basilica of San Giovanni is often used for various events and several concerts, particularly the most famous one takes place every year during the Labour Day:

The First May Concert, includes the biggest Italian and International-famous artists and draws an average of 500 - 600 thousand people every year!

By walking, it is possible to reach the district of San Lorenzo and the district of Pigneto, that are the most crowded areas with the students of the nearby University La Sapienza in Rome, full of bizarre and fashionable pubs and places !

Even the keen on shopping have a lot of things to do, they have a great time going shopping in the streets of  San Giovanni area and in the famous and crowded market of via Sannio, situated in the street with the same name, which is the ideal place for every kind of clothes and is open every day except on Sunday.
