Prati

Prati Rome

In ancient times, all the area was destined to vineyards and canbrakes belonging to Domiziano’s wife, after whom it was named “Orti Domitii”, then it turned into “Prati Neronis” and finally, during Middle Ages it was named “Prati Sancti Petri”, because it is near the Basilica of St. Peter.

The urbanization of the area started after 1870, previously it was a whole of grasses and marshes; but the real development began with the long Giovanni Giolitti government who dealt with the problems concerning the exceptional development of Rome together with the then mayor Ernesto Nathan.

In 1921 Prati District was finally built by Nathan according to the thought that Roman districts had to be self-sufficient urban areas divided by some parks.

The urban manufacturing was also very affected by the strained relations between the new Italian State and the Church; therefore, the new streets were planned so that any of them could not have St. Peter dome in the background  and the names of the streets were chosen among the heroes and the men of letters from the classic Rome and the Risorgimento, in fact one of the main squares was just named “Piazza del Risorgimento”.

Among the most important streets there is “via Cola di Rienzo”, this is the name by which was called Nicola Gabrini, a man in contrast to the Vatican power who tried to restore the Republic of Rome.

For the building of Prati District it was necessary to transport  a large quantity of material to create a difference in level to prevent flooding due to overflows of Tevere that occurred very often until then. For this reason and for the clayey subsoil of this area in Rome centre, many strengthening operations had to be done on buildings and, mainly on the Law Courts, the famous ugly building that dominates piazza Cavour, which for its massive bulk could run the risk of collapsing towards the River Tevere.

Nowadays Prati district has a very orderly and linear urban architecture, with large and smooth streets characterized by the elegant building of Umberto I and by small houses in Liberty style.

It is one of the most sought-after areas in Rome centre by tourists who not only can appreciate some of the most important and charming monuments and squares in the Capital, but they can also take some long strolls along the main streets of this area and go shopping or enter one of the known historical bars situated in that area.

Prati is also one of the best served areas in Rome centre by public transport , by the lines A of “Ottaviano” and “Cipro” subway stations, by lines of trams and many lines of buses.
